Integration

Integration is a term often used to denotate the co-operation and co-existence of various ethnic groups within society. Approximately ten per cent of the Dutch population belongs to an ethnic minority. The aim of our integration policy is to create a society where everybody actively and fully participates and where people are all treated the same way. Equal treatment is an important principle of our integration policy

Integration program for newcomers in the Netherland means that immigrants who come to live in this country for a longer period speak the language, are familiar with aspects of the Dutch society including important norms and values. The government of The Netherlands considers the integration program as a condition of integration Requirements regarding the integration program are codified in the Act on Integration Program.

As of 15 March 2006, certain foreign  nationals wishing to settle in the  Netherlands for a prolonged period who require a provisional residence permit  will have to take the civic integration examination abroad.

This requirement applies to persons between the ages of 18 and 65 who wish to form a family with someone in the Netherlands or to be reunited with family members already living in the Netherlands.
Religious leaders coming to the Netherlands for employment, such as imams or preachers, will also have to take the civic integration examination abroad.

Anyone intending to live in the Netherlands for a prolonged period must undertake some preparation prior to arrival. All newcomers are expected to have a basic knowledge of the Dutch language and of Dutch society. This is assessed by means of an examination conducted in your country of origin or current country of residence. Passing the Civic Integration Examination Abroad is one of the criteria for being granted a provisional residence permit, which is required to travel into the Netherlands and in turn is a requirement for being given a residence permit entitling you to settle in the Netherlands.
